Mein Bee Block

Ich möchte einen Quilt für eine gute Freundin nähen. Als ich sie gefragt habe, was sie sich dafür wünschen würde, war sie etwas überrumpelt und konnte sich nicht recht entscheiden. „Rote Sterne mit grauem Hintergrund“ war ihre erste Idee. Aber all die Bilder, die ich ihr von Quilts mit anderen Mustern gezeigt habe, haben ihr auch gefallen... Letztlich kann ich es selbst entscheiden J Und da mich Sterne jetzt gerade nicht so ansprechen, habe ich mich für einen Plus Quilt entschieden. So einen wollte ich schon lange mal nähen! Das ist der Block:

I am planning to sew a quilt for a friend. A longtime and very close friend. When I asked her about her wishes she was a bit overwhelmed. "Red stars on a grey background" finally was her response. But every other design and layout I showed her also caught her eye. She was a bit confused in the end. So she left the final decision to me. And as I don't want to sew red stars again (after I made the Christmas Tree Quilt), I decided on a Plus-Quilt. I always wanted to make one like that:

Den Farbwunsch meiner Freundin habe ich im Großen und Ganzen berücksichtigt, für den Hintergrund habe ich allerdings etwas freundlichere Farben gewählt – die Modern Background Stoffe von Brigitte Heitland. Da ich für den Block 5“-Stücke brauche, habe ich gleich noch zwei Charm Packs gekauft und diese mit den Stoffen erweitert, die ich aus der Serie schon daheim hatte...

I somehow stuck to the color decisions of my friend: I'm going for red pluses, but the background will be a little bit more "friendlier" - with lighter colors like white, cream and only a little bit of grey. I chose the Modern Background fabrics from Brigitte Heitland for Moda. And as I need a lot of 5" squares I simply bought two Charm Packs and added some of the fabrics of this series that I already owned...

Im Mai bin ich Bienenkönigin in unserer To be a bee Gruppe und da kommt dieses Projekt gerade richtig. Also habe ich in den letzten Tagen wann immer ich etwas Zeit erübrigen konnte, Stoffe geschnitten und die Päckchen für meine Bees gepackt:

I'm May's queen bee in our bee group "To be a bee" and this projects is perfect for a bee group. So whenever I could afford some time during the last days I cut fabrics and prepared the packages for my bee mates:

Der Block ist schnell zu nähen und ich habe bei unserem Treffen neulich ja gesehen, wie flott meine Bee-Mitglieder nähen – also habe ich ihnen ganz frech mal Stoff für zwei Blöcke eingepackt... Ist aber auch nicht schlimm, wenn jemand das nicht schafft! Ich freu mich über jeden Block, der dann am Ende des Monats bei mir ankommt!

The block is easy and fast to sew and as I was able to realize that my bee mates are pretty fast in sewing when we met in Randersacker for our retreat two weeks ago, I decided to send fabrics for two blocks :-) But it's no problem at all if someone can't make it! I'm happy with any block that will arrive her by the end of the month!

Gestern habe ich am Abend noch ein bisschen genäht – das habe ich dringend gebraucht! Die Stoffe waren ja schon alle zugeschnitten, da ging das richtig schnell und eh ich mich versah hatte ich 9 fertige Blöcke J

Yesterday in the evening I desperately needed some sewing time and some sense of achievment... As the fabrics were already cut I began to sew some plus blocks - and faster than expected I had 9 blocks finished! 

Ein wirklich schönes Projekt - ich glaube, der Quilt wird richtig toll!

I do love this project and I'm sure these blocks will make a fabulous quilt!

Was ist sonst noch so los hier? Nun - heute beginnen in Bayern die Abiturprüfungen und mein Sohn ist mit dabei... Es geht los mit Mathe, dann in der nächsten Woche weiter mit Deutsch und dem dritten schriftlichen Fach - bei meinem Sohn wird das Biologie... Mittlerweile ist es ja üblich, dass man ermunternde Plakate vor die Schule hängt. Unsere Tochter war da mit einer Freundin mehr als fleißig - da kann doch gar nichts schiefgehen, oder?

What else is going on here? Well, today the final exams for the graduation from high school started here in Bavaria... 39.000 pupils had to write their test in maths today. And my son was one of them... Next week they have to do a test in German (which lasts 5 hours!!!) and then a third written test in an additional course. My son chose Biology :-) Three weeks later they have to pass the oral exams - for my son this will be English and Economics. Nowadays it's a tradition to hang cheering banners outside of the school. My daughter and a friend of her clearly surpassed themselves with this lovely banner for our son. Even his childhood hero Pooh the bear or Winnie the Pooh as we say in German (he knew every story by heart when he was about 5 years old!)  is keeping his fingers crossed :-)

Bee Blöcke im April

Zum Nähen komme ich gerade so gut wie gar nicht... Hier ist ziemlich viel los. Es gibt einen Geburtstag zu feiern, es ist jemand krank und am Freitag beginnen hier in Bayern die Abiturprüfungen - und mein Sohn ist mit dabei...

I don't have a lot of sewing time right now... It's pretty busy around here - we are celebrating a birthday, my mother is ill and on Friday the final exams for the graduation on high school are starting. It's my son's turn this year...

Aber zu zeigen habe ich zum Glück noch etwas. Ich habe bei meinem letzten Post vergessen, das Nadelkissen zu zeigen, dass ich für unser Bee Treffen in Randersacker genäht habe. Erwürfelt und gezogen hat es Heidi und ich hoffe, sie hat Spaß damit :-)

But I'm glad that I have still something to show. I forgot to show the pincushion I sewed for the lottery we made when we met in Randersacker. Heidi got mine and I hope she loves it :-)

Für den rot-grauen Einsatz habe ich mir schnell eine Papiervorlage gezeichnet - damit das auch ordentlich aussieht. Das bunte Feld ist 1,5" groß. Für außen habe ich Leinenstoff verwendet und innen ist das Nadelkissen mit Vogelsand gefüllt.

I made me a paper piecing pattern for the little colored piece - it's 1,5". For the outer part I used linen and filled the pincushion with sand.

Trotz all des Stresses hier - Beeblöcke gehen immer, da hat man schnell ein Ergebnis. Und Dagmar hat es mir diesen Monat als Bienenkönigin in unserer To be a bee Gruppe leicht gemacht. Das war schnell genäht und hat Spaß gemacht:

Bee blocks are usually fast to make and that's perfect if there's only little sewing time. Dagmar asked us for some paper piecing blocks this month. I loved sewing them:

Den Block habe ich schon Anfang April wieder zurück geschickt und mittlerweile hat Dagmar noch ein paar mehr Blöcke bekommen. Das ist ihr erster Auslegeversuch:

In meiner anderen Bee-Gruppe war Kirsten die Bienenkönigin. Sie hat sich einen wunderschönen Block ausgesucht - nur die mitgeschickten Stoffe waren mir persönlich zu bunt :-)

Kirsten is April's queen bee in the bee group "Fleißige Bee'nchen". She asked for a lovely block - only the fabrics she sent were a little bit too colorful for me :-)

Kirsten hat mir in Randersacker gezeigt, wie sie sich den Quilt am Ende vorstellt. Es gibt völlig unterschiedliche Farbzusammenstellungen des Blocks und das soll dann am Ende noch einmal ein Muster ergeben - ich bin schon sehr gespannt darauf! Kirsten ist später im Jahr auch bei den To-be-a-bees noch an der Reihe, da darf ich den Block also mit anderen Farben noch einmal nähen :-)

When we met in Randersacker she showed me what the quilt will look like in the end. There will be many other blocks like this one in other color combinations. Kirsten will be queen bee in our other group as well and so I'll sew this block again later this year :-) In different colors :-)

Und dann ist da noch die Bubbles Bee. Sie geht Ende diesen Monats für mich zu Ende. Meine Blöcke habe ich alle genäht und verschickt, jetzt warte ich selber noch auf zwei Blöcke und dann sehe ich, wie alle Blöcke zusammen aussehen und welche Blöcke ich selbst noch nähen muss. Diese Blöcke habe ich bisher:

Well, and then there's the bubbles bee. I sewed all my blocks and am still waiting for two more to arrive. After that I will have a look at all my blocks together and will see what it looks like and what colors are still missing. So that I can sew the fitting blocks and finish this quilt :-)

Der letzte, der hier ankam, war von meiner Freundin Bettina. Sie hätte gar nicht mehr für mich nähen müssen, hat aber für Celine im April übernommen... Die hatte wohl noch ziemlich viel zu nähen und Bettina war mit ihren Bubbles fertig. Schön, wenn man sich gegenseitig so hilft :-)

The last bubble to arrive here was made by my friend Bettina. It wasn't her turn to sew for me in April but she took over from Celine who still had quite a lot of sewing to be done. As Bettina already had finished all her bubbles she helped Celine. Isn't that lovely? :-)

So, und jetzt muss ich mich ein bisschen um meinen Haushalt kümmern...

And now I have to go and do the laundry and some cleaning...

Bee Wochenende

Als Heidi und ich zu Beginn des letzten Jahres die Online Bee-Gruppe "To be a bee" ins Leben gerufen haben, wussten wir noch nicht so recht, wie sich das entwickeln würde. Doch es war von Anfang an richtig schön - wir passen alle gut zusammen, das gemeinsame Nähen im Netz macht richtig viel Spaß und so wurde irgendwann die Idee geboren, sich auch mal im echten Leben zu treffen und zusammen zu nähen. Ein Termin wurde festgelegt, eine Unterkunft gesucht und am vergangenen Wochenende war es endlich soweit! Und so viel kann ich schon einmal vorweg nehmen: Es war ein voller Erfolg!!!

When Heidi and I started the "To be a bee" bee-group more than a year ago, we didn't know what to expect and how this will turn out. But we needn't worry about it - the group is gorgeous! And that's why we decided to meet in real life as well. We found a date and a nice hotel and became more excited the closer the date came. The last weekend we all met and spent a fantastic time together! 

Wir haben uns aus logistischen Gründen in Randersacker eingemietet - da hatten wir alle ungefähr gleich weit zu fahren - mit Ausnahme von Iva, die sich ja aus der Schweiz auf den Weg zu uns gemacht hat. Im Laufe des Nachmittags sind alle so langsam eingetrudelt, wir haben unseren Tagungsraum bezogen und kistenweise Sachen angeschleppt - sowas gab es dort wohl noch nie :-) Das Hotel war wirklich ein Glücksgriff - alle total nett, wir wurden vom Feinsten verpflegt - und das auch noch reichlich! Morgens ein schönes Frühstücksbuffet, am Vormittag Kaffee, Tee und Obst, dann wieder Mittagessen mit verschiedenen Auswahlmöglichkeiten, nachmittags Kaffee, Tee und Kuchen und dann ein wundervolles Abendessen... Die Gegend war auch wunderschön - nur leider haben wir davon ja nicht so viel gesehen, weil wir fast die ganze Zeit - wenn wir nicht gerade beim Essen waren :-) - an den Nähmaschinen saßen :-))) Ein kleiner Spaziergang war aber drin:

Regarding that we all live in different parts of Germany (and Switzerland) we tried to find a place somewhere in the middle and decided on Randersacker close to Würzburg. Friday in the afternoon one after the other arrived and we moved into our "sewing room" and carried lots of stuff in there - I think, the people of the hotel have never had a group like ours before :-) We really hit the bull's-eye with the hotel. Wonderful and helpful staff, gorgeous food - and we had lots of it -, a lovely garden and surrounding... Although we haven't seen that much of it because we spent most of the time in front of the sewing machines :-) But a little walk after lunch showed the beauty of the area:

In unserem Nähzimmer wurde erst mal eine weitere Verpflegungsstation errichtet :-)

In our sewing room we had a catering station with sweets and treats :-)

Und dann ging's los. Mit einem kleinen, gemeinsamen Nähprojekt zum "Warmnähen" :-) Ulrike hatte uns gebeten, fünf Stoffkreise in CD-Größe vorzubereiten - aus denen sind dann in Null Komma Nix diese witzigen Glasuntersetzer geworden:

And then we started with a little project. Ulrike asked us to bring five fabric circles in the size of a CD - within less than five minutes we made these lovely coasters out of them:

Ansonsten hatte ich mir für dieses Wochenende nur zwei Projekte fix vorgenommen: Ich wollte mein Landmädel-Top endlich fertig machen und eine Market Bag aus dem tollen Buch "Handmade Style" von Anna Graham nähen. Doch angefangen habe ich dann mit einer Fünffach-Tasche von Farbenmix. Diese Anleitung gab es letzten Winter als Adventskalender-Nähprojekt, doch da hatte ich reisebedingt ja keine Zeit zum Nähen. Am Donnerstag jedoch habe ich mich - ebenfalls zum "Warmnähen" vor dem großen Bee-Wochenende - noch mit ein paar Freundinnen bei Ulrike getroffen und wir wollten diese Tasche nähen. Ich bin fast fertig geworden, musste dann aber heim zu den Kindern. Eigentlich wollte ich die Tasche dann am Abend noch fertig machen, habe aber leider das Teil für die zweite Außentasche bei Ulrike liegen gelassen :-) Schussel... Also wurde das zu meinem Freitagabend Projekt :-)

I wanted to finish two projects during this weekend: My Farmer's Wife Quilttop and the Market Bag from Anna Graham (pattern in her book "Handmade Style"). But due to my sloppiness I also had to finish another bag... one with five pockets from Farbenmix. It was a free pattern last winter but I couldn't sew it at that time because I was travelling down under with my husband :-) But on Thursday I met some friends at Ulrike's house and we started to sew such a bag. I was almost finished when I had to go back home to my kids. It would have been easy to finish it in the evening - if only I hadn't forgotten one of the outer parts at Ulrike's place... Fortunately she brought it with her to our weekend and so I finished it after our wonderful dinner :-)

Am Samstag habe ich zunächst meine Teile vom Landmädel-Quilt hervorgeholt. Diesen Quilt habe ich vor ewigen Zeiten beim Landmädel QAL auf flickr begonnen und eigentlich wollte ich ihn vor eineinhalb Jahren im Pfingsturlaub fertig nähen. Aber irgendwie hat das nicht geklappt. Und seitdem fristete das halbfertige Stück ein trauriges Dasein in einem Wäschekorb in meinem Schrank. Verdeckt von einem anderen Langzeitprojekt... Es wurde Zeit, es wieder ans Licht zu holen :-)
Zunächst musste ich mich erst wieder hineindenken, dann habe ich geschnitten und genäht und am Ende hatte ich das Top (fast) fertig - nur die Dreiecke an den Ecken fehlen noch. Aber ich bin schon superhappy, dass das jetzt geschafft ist und ich räume das Top gar nicht erst wieder weg, sondern mache gleich weiter :-) Wollt Ihr mal sehen?

Saturday morning I started to work on my Farmer's Wife Quilt Top. I participated in the German QAL more than two years ago and wanted to finish it during our holidays in June 2014... Well, I didn't and since then it was an UFO hidden in my wardrobe. What a pity! It was definitely time to finish this beauty. It took me some time to remember what to do but when I figured it out I cut, sewed and worked quietly until I was finished - well, almost finished since the corner triangles are still missing. But I won't put it aside again until it is a real finish :-) 

Als das geschafft war, scharrte Ulrike schon ungeduldig mit den Hufen :-) Denn gemeinsam wollten wir die Market Bag nähen. Seit ich die tolle Version von Saija gesehen habe, wollte ich auch so eine Tasche nähen und jetzt legten wir los. Eine super Anleitung - wie immer bei Noddlehead - aber auch viel Arbeit. Vor allem wegen des engen Quiltings... Da saß ich eine ganze Weile dran!

Ulrike was impatiently waiting for me to finish my Farmer's Wife project because we planned to start another project together - the Market Bag. The moment I saw the awesome bag Saija made, I knew I had to sew one like that as well. The moment was here :-) The pattern and instructions are gorgeous - as always when it comes to Noodlehead patterns. But also a lot of work... Especially because of the narrow quilting. That took me more than an hour!

Am Abend habe ich dann zu allem Übel auch noch die dünne Bügeleinlage verkehrt auf's Bügelbrett gelegt und nicht auf meinen Futterstoff, sondern zielsicher auf das Bügelbrett gebügelt. Zeit für eine Pause...? Definitiv! Also ab zum Abendessen und danach gab es erst einmal eine kleine Verlosung von genähten Kleinigkeiten, die jede von uns mitgebracht hatte:

In the evening I made a stupid mistake and pressed the fusible woven interfacing on my ironing board instead of the lining fabric... Time for a break? Yes, definitely! So we went to dinner and afterwards had a lottery with handmade items we prepared at home:

Anschließend ein wirklich lustiges Show and Tell und dann wurde bis spät in die Nacht weitergenäht. Und geratscht :-) Auf alle Fälle habe ich die Tasche an dem Abend nicht mehr fertig bekommen und musste am nächsten Morgen weitermachen. Aber genau rechtzeitig vorm Mittagessen habe ich die letzte Naht gesetzt und bin jetzt stolze Besitzerin dieser Market Bag:

We also had a fantastic Show and Tell, drank some wine, chatted a lot and sewed until midnight :-) I didn't finish my bag and had to go on the next morning. I was completely finished just in time before we went to lunch and now I am the proud owner of this Market Bag:

Danach war erst mal ein bisschen die Luft raus... Dafür habe ich mir endlich mal Zeit genommen und ein bisschen in all den mitgebrachten Patchwork-Büchern gestöbert :-)
Gemeinsam mit Heidi habe ich dann noch an meinem Reisebee-Top gearbeitet. Das musste noch zusammengesetzt bzw. ein bisschen umgeordnet werden. Wir haben überlegt, getrennt, umgeordnet, überlegt, wieder getrennt, neu angeordnet und jetzt ist ein ganz guter Plan entstanden:

I was a bit tired after all that concentrated sewing and couldn't really decide on another sewing project. But I took the time to have a look at the wonderful and interesting patchwork books everybody brought with her and which we collected on a small table in our room :-)
Together with Heidi I finally worked a little bit on my Round Robin Travelling Bee Top. As it was not a finished top when I got it back I decided to rearrange the blocks a little bit. So we thought about a layout, ripped some seams, arranged the blocks, ripped and rearranged again and came up with a good plan:

Leider näherte sich unser Treffen damit aber auch schon dem Ende... So langsam wurde hier und da mit dem Einpacken begonnen und ein bisschen wehmütige Stimmung kam auf. Klar, dass wir für's nächste Jahr gleich wieder ein Wochenende geblockt und gebucht haben :-)

Unfortunately the end of our retreat was coming closer... One after the other packed up all her belongings and there was a bit of melancholy in the air. But of course we already blocked and booked a weekend in 2017 and are looking forward to meeting again! 
I took so much more pictures but of course I can't show them all... Perhaps you might have a look at the blogs of Heidi, Karen, Martina, Kirsten, Verena or Iva - I'm sure, they'll show pictures and write about our retreat within the next days too :-)
