Other than the girlish birthday quilt from my last post I also finished another birthday quilt. For my neighbours 60th birthday. Which was two years ago... My neighbour is always very helpful whenever we need anything and it was no question for me to sew a quilt for him. But it was difficult to agree on a pattern of fabric colors. He himself suggested white and blue like the Bavarian sky. But these colors didn't fit at all into their living room. They have a red sofa and I didn't like this combination. That's why I "only" made a pillow for the real birthday and tried to find a fitting pattern for a quilt afterwards. I flipped through my quilt books and discussed my problem with my husband and didn't come up with a decision. I think, my neighbour already gave up his hopes for a quilt...

In the end I chose the pattern "Baby Jacks" out of the book "Modern Paper Piecing". I thought it was too busy to make a whole quilt with this pattern and thus decided on doing two columns with the pattern and use solids on both sides of it. I started and still wasn't sure. So I took the first chance of distraction by another project and put this one away. And whenever my husband asked about it I felt guilty. One month, two months... and I felt more guilty with every day. It's not only because of the Corona crisis that I finally finished this quilt project. I went on our yearly sewing retreat with my local patchwork group and didn't have a new project - so I took this one with me and managed to finish the top. Wow.

Wieder etwas gelernt :-)

And the Corona lockdown finally made me finish the whole quilt without further delay. This modern quilt asked for a modern quilting. I decided on straight line quilting in the solid "negative space" areas and in shadow quilting the pattern part. Marking the quilting lines took some time and my water soluable pen was empty after a quarter of the whole space. I marked the rest with a light colored chalk pen which I hardly could see later on under the strong light of my longarm. Lesson learnt!

For the binding I used all the tiny pieces I had left from the colored fabrics of the quilt. Great! Now there's space for new fabrics :-)))

The weather was good and we took the chance to take some pictures outside.

It was then when I recognized that one quilting line was missing...

Rechts unten - gesehen?

In the bottom corner on the right side. And I know how this happened. Exactly on this line was one of the basting threads and I didn't want to quilt over it because it's always hard to pick the basting thread afterwards when you sew over it. So I decided to quilt the whole area around it and do this line in the end after picking the basting thread. And of course I forgot! But I didn't notice because the basting thread was inside until the end and when I finally picked it the whole quilt was finished and we went out to take the pictures. Well, good that we did. Otherwise I had gifted a quilt with a missing quilting line... My neighbour was totally surprised when I gave him this quilt and he LOVES it. And I'm happy that another ufo is finished!

At the moment I am a bit unhappy about the whole Corona situation. I don't like the thought of having to stay at home instead of spending a summer holiday with my family. I even don't really want to sew. I hope it'll get better soon because there are a lot of projects waiting to get finished...

Habt eine schöne Woche, bleibt gesund!

Have a nice week and stay safe!
