Sew together bag

Ich habe es noch einmal getan - eine Sew-together-bag genäht :-) Die erste habe ich im vergangenen Jahr zusammen mit Freundinnen genäht und schon damals habe ich mir vorgenommen, das noch einmal zu machen. Ich hatte auch eine Idee für die Außenseite - nur mit der Umsetzung hat es halt etwas gedauert. Aber jetzt ist sie fertig:

I did it again and sewed a Sew-together-bag :-) When I made the first one together with some friends of mine I already decided to make another one. I even had an idea how to create the outside part. It just took some time to realize this project. But now it's finished:

Ich habe für die Außenseite Reste der Stoffe vom Quilt für meine Tochter benutzt. Daraus habe ich Hexagons gemacht und brav zusammengenäht.

I used some leftover scraps from the quilt for my daughter, made hexies and created the outer part of the bag with them.

Und um mal zu verdeutlichen, wie lange ich die Fertigstellung dieser Tasche nun schon vor mir hergeschoben habe - die Hexies habe ich schon letztes Jahr im Januar angefangen und als Beschäftigung mit ins Krankenhaus genommen :-)

Just to tell you, how long it took me to finish this Sew-together-bag-project: I took those fabrics with me when I went to hospital last year in January and made the hexies there... :-)

Letzte Woche aber hat Bettina mich zum Weiternähen überredet. Sie wollte nämlich ihre erste Sew-together-bag nähen und das macht halt einfach mehr Spaß zu zweit :-) Mit der bebilderten Hilfestellung von Marlies muss man sich auch nicht immer so genau durch die Anleitung kämpfen. Denn so schön die Tasche ist, die Anleitung ist halt doch ein bisschen "dürftig" - ein paar Bilder hätten es schon sein dürfen... Egal, es hat alles ganz super geklappt und am Ende des Tages war meine Tasche fertig:

Last week my friend Bettina convinced me to finish my bag. She wanted to sew her first one and it is so much more fun to sew together - I'm sure, that's why this bag is called "Sew together bag" :-) I love this bag, but the instruction could be a little bit more detailed. Fortunately Marlies made a German Sew Along with lots of pictures, that makes it much easier to understand what to do... 
At the end of the day my bag was finished:

Ich hatte sie eigentlich für meine Tochter gedacht - weil doch die Stoffe so schön zu ihrer Decke passen... Nun hat Bettina vorgeschlagen, dass ich meine Tasche auch an eine gemeinsame Freundin verschenken könnte, die zufällig an unserem Nähtag Geburtstag hatte. Hm... Ich habe meiner Tochter die fertige Tasche dann gezeigt und sie gefragt, ob sie die gerne haben möchte oder ob ich sie an unsere Freundin verschenken soll. Meine Tochter hat die Tasche gedreht und gewendet, begutachtet und dann beschlossen "Gib sie Annette!" Tja, wenigstens ist sie ehrlich. Und Annette wird sich sicherlich freuen :-)

When I started sewing the bag I intended to give it to my daughter. Of course, as I used the fabrics of her quilt. But then Bettina suggested to give it to a friend of us who celebrated her birthday on our sewing day. Hm... difficult. Well, I showed the finished bag to my daughter and asked her, whether she wants to get it. She examined it and said "Give it to Annette!" Well, at least she is honest :-) And I'm sure, Annette will be more than happy!

Ich habe schon öfter mal Hexagons von Hand genäht - aber noch nie etwas daraus fertiggestellt. Das ist also jetzt eine richtige Premiere! :-)

I made EPP hexies once in a while but I never finished anything. So that's a real premiere!

Neuer Quilt für den Laden

Seit wir die Blueberry Park Stoffe von Karen Lewis für Robert Kaufman im Laden haben, haben wir auch schon überlegt, was wir daraus Hübsches nähen könnten. Die Wahl fiel auf einen Quilt nach einem Design von John Adams. Und ich habe mich freiwillig gemeldet, diesen Quilt zu nähen - denn diese Stoffe wollte ich unheimlich gerne verarbeiten!
Das war die Auswahl, die ich mit nach Hause genommen habe

Since we got the Blueberry Park fabrics from Karen Lewis for Robert Kaufman in our local quiltshop, we wanted to sew a lovely quilt for the shop out of them. We decided to use a design from John Adams and I volunteered to sew because I wanted to make something out of this popular fabric line! 
These are the fabrics I took home

und dann habe ich fleißig geschnitten...

Anschließend habe ich mal wieder unzählige HSTs genäht und getrimmt:

Da meine Familie mich über's Wochenende alleine gelassen hat und Skifahren gegangen ist, habe ich mich am Esstisch ausgebreitet. Da habe ich einfach mehr Licht, es geht mal ein Nachbar vorbei und winkt - man fühlt sich nicht so alleine :-)
Es ging ganz gut voran, das war der erste fertige Einzelblock, er ist 6,5 Inches groß:

Since my family left me alone and went skiing for the weekend I took my stuff down into the dining room - I have a lot of space there (not the usual mess that's on my sewing desk :-) ), more light and from time to time a neighbour goes by and waves - so I don't feel so alone :-)

und erst immer zwei Einzelteile zu einem Zweierblock zusammen genäht. Damit ging es dann heute in der Früh weiter, die Katze hat mir Gesellschaft geleistet:

Diese Teile wurden dann in Reihe zu ganzen Blöcken zusammen genäht

These half-blocks were joined to a full block 

und zu kompletten Vierer-Blöcken zusammen gefügt. So ungefähr wird das dann aussehen:

Ich glaube, das wird ein schöner, frischer Quilt. Die Stoffe leuchten schön und wirken mit dem Druck sehr schön! Aber Vorsicht: Man darf den Stoff nicht auf der rechten Seite bügeln, weil die Farbe sonst "schmilzt"... Auch zu heiß sollte es nicht sein. Ich habe den Stoff einfach immer zwischen Küchenpapier gelegt und dann gebügelt, da haben weder das Bügelbrett, noch das Bügeleisen gelitten :-) Und die Stoffe auch nicht!

I'm sure this will be a lovely and fresh looking quilt. The fabrics are bright and I love the print on them. But you have to pay attention when ironing. Don't iron on the right side of the fabric and don't use too much heat. This will damage the print! I used kitchen paper towels on each side of the fabric and neither the ironing board nor the iron itself got soiled.

Reisebee

Vor einem Jahr ging es los mit der Reisebee "12 Bee'nchen auf Reisen" - einem Round Robin Projekt. Zwölf Frauen, die im monatlichen Wechsel an den Quilttops der anderen angenäht haben... Und jetzt trudeln die Tops alle so langsam wieder ein :-) Das ist richtig spannend! Auch das Paket mit meinem Teil ist jetzt wieder da. Eigentlich ist es ja schon ein bisschen länger da, da ich aber mit dem Nähen von Heidi's Top noch nicht fertig war, bin ich standhaft geblieben und habe erst mal fertiggenäht und dann nachgesehen, was ich bekommen habe :-)

Last year I participated in a "Travelling bee", a round robin project. Twelve women, sewing on each others top and in the end you get your top back, not knowing what it will look like... What an adventure :-) Now most of the tops arrived "home", mine arrived a couple of days ago. It's not yet a finished top, I still have to work on it a little bit: 

Das Thema meines Quilts sollte grob gesagt alles rund um ein Zuhause sein. Dafür habe ich folgenden Mittelblock genäht:

Die Buchstaben, die ich dafür verwendet habe, sind von Regina Grewe. Ich habe sie allerdings ein bisschen verkleinert, damit der Mittelblock nicht schon alle Dimensionen sprengt... :-) Dann ging die Wanderschaft los. Und jeden Monat haben die anderen Mitnäherinnen einen kleinen Ausschnitt gezeigt - das war teilweise echt schwer, zu erkennen, was da genäht wurde :-)

I used a pattern of Regina Grewe for the alphabet but I downsized it because otherwise the start block would have been too large :-) Then I sent it all away and didn't really know what was going on with it :-) Of course I asked my bee mates to show a little sneak peek but usually you can't tell what they made :-)

Angefangen hat Heidi. Sie hat meine Familie genäht - das wusste ich, weil sie mich nach der Haarfarbe meiner Kinder gefragt hat :-) Die Ausschnitte, die sie gezeigt hat, haben aber nicht viel verraten :-)

Heidi was the first one to sew on my top. She sewed my whole family. I knew that because she asked me about the color of the hair of my kids :-) But the sneak peek didn't allow much insight :-)

Heidi hat die Blöcke extra ein bisschen größer gemacht und einzeln mitgeschickt, damit die anderen Näherinnen die Möglichkeit haben, sie zurechtzuschneiden und an passenden Stellen einzufügen.
Sie hat dann alles weitergeschickt an Leo. Ihr Ausschnitt hat mich noch neugieriger gemacht - ich hatte wirklich keine Idee, was das sein könnte :-)

She left the blocks a little larger and didn't sew them together because she suggested that they might be integrated in the top on different places and so everyone had the chance to make them fitting... She sent everything to Leo who was next. Her sneak peek left me totally clueless :-)

Gestapelte Müslischüsseln... Nie im Leben hätte ich das erraten! Und dabei passt das wirklich hervorragend zu meinen Leuten - morgens wird hier im Haus an Schultagen immer Müsli gegessen :-)

Cereal bowls stacked on each other... I never would have guessed that! But it fits so well as my kids always eat cereals in the morning before they go to school. We have lots of cereal bowls :-)

Leonie hat das Päckchen weitergeschickt zu Kirsten. Sie hat mir die wunderschöne Katze genäht. Super! Und natürlich total passend :-) Außerdem sind die vier schönen Tulpenblöcke von ihr!

From Leonie the package went to Kirsten. She sewed a lovely cat for me. Well, of course a perfect block, as a cat belongs to our home! Kirsten also made four lovely tulip blocks.

Von Kirsten ging es weiter zu Kris. Ihr Ausschnitt hat angedeutet, dass es wohl irgendwas mit Pflanzen und Garten zu tun hat. Aber was genau...?

Kris hat das Ganze dann an Jennifer geschickt. Ihr Ausschnitt hat mich wieder ein bisschen vor Rätsel gestellt... Ein Zaun vielleicht?

Von Jennifer aus ging das Top nach Berlin - erst zu Kerstin, dann zu Katrin. Von beiden gab es tolle Blöcke und Ausschnitte:

Bei den Buchstaben wurde dann von allen gerätselt, was es wohl heißen könnte... Sehr lustig :-) Aber draufgekommen ist niemand! Ich auch nicht :-) Super, dass Katrin die gleichen Buchstaben verwendet hat, wie ich. Das macht es harmonischer!

Regarding the letters everyone was guessing what she might have written... That was very funny :-) But no one found it out. Me neither :-) I love that Katrin used the same pattern as I did - it fits so well!

Katrin hat alles dann wieder in Richtung Süden zu Martine geschickt. Ihr Beitrag ist wirklich der Knüller! Absolut einmalig und außerdem sowas von perfekt - unsere Familie ist sehr reiselustig!!!

From Berlin everything went back south to Munich and Martine got it. Her part is so amazing and fantastic! And soooo perfect for me and my family as we all love traveling so much!

Anschließend durfte Eva weiternähen. Sie hat - wie mir jetzt erst auffiel - gar keinen Ausschnitt gezeigt. Das war wohl die Zeit, als es in unserer Reisebee ein bisschen hektisch wurde, weil das Top von Katrin irgendwie vorübergehend auf der Reise verschollen war... Zum Glück hat es sich aber wieder eingefunden! Eva hat mir die wunderschönen Flying Geese Blöcke genäht.

Then it was Eva's part. I just recognized now, that she forgot to show a sneak peek :-) It must have been around the time when one of the quilt tops went missing... We all were nervous and already made plans to sew a new one, but finally it showed up! Eva sewed these awesome flying geese for me.

Nach Eva befand sich der Quilt dann ganz in meiner Nähe - bei meiner Freundin Bettina. Normalerweise treffe ich mich ja regelmässig mit ihr zum Nähen. Mal bei ihr, mal bei mir. In dieser Zeit hat sie mich nicht in ihr Haus gelassen :-))) Damit ich ja nicht in ihr Nähzimmer schauen kann :-)
Vor lauter Heimlichkeiten hat sie dann glatt vergessen, einen Ausschnitt zu zeigen - Bettina hat mir die tollen Vögel und das Herz genäht.

Eva sent everything to Bettina and so the top was very close to me... Bettina is a good friend of mine. We usually try to meet and sew together once a week. When she was working on my top she didn't invite me to come to her house and sew with her. She was afraid that I might spy my top :-) Keeping it a secret made her forget to show the sneak peek :-) She made the lovely birds and the heart.

Die letzte Station meines Tops war Monika. Sie hat es wirklich spannend gemacht:

Monika hat sich auch die Vorlagen für die Buchstaben besorgt und mir das Wort "Stories" genäht. Toll! Sehr happy bin ich auch über die kleinen Raspberry Kiss-Blöcke, die sie mir als Füller noch mitgeschickt hat. Ich liebe diese Blöcke, die sehen einfach klasse aus! Und die Idee, mir 12 Blöcke - quasi symbolisch für jede Mitnäherin - zu machen, finde ich auch sehr süß!

Monika bought the pattern for the letters too and sewed the word "Stories" for me. Wonderful. Of course there are lots of stories to tell within a family :-) I love the little raspberry kiss blocks she made for me too! I've always loved these blocks and now I have some - 12! The idea was, that these blocks symbolize the 12 bee mates :-) What a lovely idea!

Jetzt muss ich all die schönen Blöcke nur noch zu einem Ganzen zusammenfügen. Und ich werde wohl auch ein bisschen was dazufügen - denn bisher ist es sehr breit, aber halt im Verhältnis noch nicht so lang. Mal sehen, was mir da noch einfällt :-) Ich werde hoffentlich bald etwas zeigen können...

So I got a lot of fantastic blocks! But the top is not complete yet... I have to work on it and hope to be able to show the result within a couple of weeks!

Zusätzlich zu den Blöcken hat jede Bee auch noch einen Siggie-Block genäht. Die werde ich dann auf der Rückseite einsetzen. Vielen lieben Dank Euch allen für die Mühe, die da drinsteckt! Besonders toll ist auch der Gruppenblock, den Jennifer jeder Teilnehmerin gemacht hat!

The bee mates not only sewed and sent their blocks, additionally every one of them made a lovely signature block for the back of the quilt. So ladies, thanks a lot for all the work and creativity! I also love the group block, that Jennifer made for every participant! A wonderful idea and reminder of that project!

Diese Reisebee war ein ganz tolles Projekt - ich habe es geliebt, jeden Monat ein Paket aufzumachen, überrascht zu werden von der Aufgabe, die mir da gestellt wurde, zu sehen, was die anderen so gemacht haben und zu versuchen, die Quilttops für die anderen Teilnehmerinnen zu einem wirklich schönen Top zu machen! Klar ist das manchmal nicht so einfach, weil zwölf völlig unterschiedliche Frauen mit unterschiedlichen Vorlieben und Geschmäckern daran genäht haben. Ich finde aber, dass sich meist alles gut zusammengefügt hat.

I really loved this project! I loved receiving a package with a new challenge inside - not knowing what to expect. I loved being part of such a creative process, trying to make something fitting for someone else whom I (mostly) didn't know in person. I always tried to meet the request of each bee mate - which of course isn't always easy in a group of 12 ladies with different tastes and preferences. But I think that in most cases the result is satisfying and appealing. 

Wollt Ihr noch sehen, was ich so genäht habe? Das erste Top, an dem ich nähen durfte, war das von Monika. Sie hat sich einen Quilt nur mit Unis und einem bestimmten schwarz-weißen Stoff (den sie mitgeschickt hat) gewünscht. Das habe ich ihr genäht

Do you want to see what I made for the others? The first top I got was Monika's. She asked for solids and a little bit of a certain black and white fabric that she enclosed. That's what I made

und das ist das Top, das sie jetzt zurückbekommen hat:

Dann kam das Teil von Bettina zu mir - Herzen war das Motiv, die Farben schwarz, grau, rot und rosa. Das habe ich genäht

The next one was Bettina's top - her theme were hearts, the requested colors black, grey, red and pink. So I made this block

Toll! Das wird ein schöner neuer Quilt für ihre jüngste Tochter.

Als nächstes habe ich für Eva genäht. Sie hat sich sozusagen einen Samplerquilt gewünscht. Ich habe dafür diesen Block genäht

Dann kam das Top von Martine - eine echte Herausforderung. Martine näht so genial gut und toll, da hatte ich schon ein bisschen Respekt davor, da selbst anzunähen... Das habe ich zu ihrem Bauhaus-Mondrian Quilt beigetragen:

The next top to arrive here at my house was Martine's - a real challenge. Martine is such a gorgeous and perfect sewer, I really admire her capabilities and was afraid of sewing for her... That's my block for her Bauhaus-Mondrian quilt:

Eine echte Herausforderung war dann aber das Top von Katrin... Ich bin nicht so der Wonky-Typ, das geht mir nicht so leicht von der Hand. Am Ende war ich mit meinem Teil aber ganz zufrieden, Inspiration dafür habe ich mir auf einer von Katrin's Pinterest Pinwänden geholt :-) Jetzt am Ende finde ich, dass mein Teil ein bisschen auffällt, weil alle anderen eher "rundlich" sind und meines doch ein bisschen eckig ist...

Another real challenge for me was Katrin's top. I'm not so experienced in sewing wonky and it wasn't that easy for me. But in the end I was quite happy with my block. I found some inspiration on Katrin's pinterest account :-) But regarding the finished top now, my part seems to be a bit angular compared to all the wavy parts...

Als nächstes habe ich an Kerstins Top gearbeitet. Dafür bin ich erst mal Stoffe kaufen gegangen, denn so richtig passende hatte ich nicht. Aber man braucht ja immer einen Grund zum Einkaufen, oder? ;-)

The next month I was working on the top of Kerstin. First, I had to buy some fabrics because I really didn't have anything fitting. But that's easy, isn't it? ;-)

Das ist nun das fertige Top von Kerstin. Heidi fand meinen orangefarbenen Streifen nicht so super :-) Sie hat ihn deshalb durch einen grünlich-türkisen ersetzt. Das passt auch wirklich viel besser jetzt!

That's the finished top Kerstin got back. Heidi replaced my orange stripe with a more greenish-turquoise one and she was totally right - it looks better now :-)

Im nächsten Monat habe ich dann für Jennifer genäht. Sie hat sich einen Weltraum-Quilt gewünscht. Da ihr Quilttop aber wohl noch nicht angekommen ist zeige ich jetzt hier auch noch nichts.
Das gilt auch für Kris' Top, für die ich dann im Herbst genäht habe. Sobald sie ihr Top bekommen hat, kann ich zeigen, was ich gemacht habe :-)

Then I was sewing for Jennifer. She wanted to have an outer space quilt. But as her top hasn't yet arrived I can't show my part now. This also applies to Kris' top - but as soon as they arrive, I am going to show you what I created :-)

Deswegen geht es hier jetzt mit Kirsten's Top weiter. Bunt und fröhlich sollte das werden... Kirsten hat in ihrem Reisetagebuch auch ein paar Wünsche geäußert. In meinem Fall hieß das, dass sie gerne eine Figur mit einem braunen Käppi haben wollte - so, wie auf meinem Profilbild :-) Das war nicht ganz einfach, denn ich hatte keine geeignete Vorlage dafür. Also habe ich selbst gezeichnet, das Ganze in eine Vorlage umfunktioniert und genäht.

So let's go on with the top of Kirsten. Colourful and happy was the request... And Kirsten asked for some favours in her travel-diary. She asked me for a figure with a brown cap - similar to my profile picture :-) Well, I didn't have a pattern for something like that and so I started drawing a picture and trying to use this drawing as a basis for a foundation paper piecing block...

Ich habe die einzelnen Teile, die ich für Kirsten genäht habe, nicht zusammengenäht, sondern einzeln an Heidi weiter geschickt. Denn an dem Top war nur noch ein Dreieck zu füllen und drei Leute sollten noch daran nähen. Ich hätte nicht gewusst, wie ich meine Teile da jetzt hätte sinnvoll annähen können. Das hat Heidi dann mit ihren Teilen zusammen gemacht :-) Kirsten's Top sieht nun so aus:

I sent all the pieces to Heidi and she added them to the top together with her pieces. There was only a triangle left and I didn't know how to sew my stuff onto it without creating a sewing problem for Heidi. Poor Heidi had to do my work :-) Kirsten's top looks like this now:

Nach dem Top von Kirsten kam das Top von Leonie zu mir. Farblich so gar nicht meines, aber alles zusammen doch sehr harmonisch und stimmig. Vor allem hat mir auch gefallen, dass alle immer die gleichen Füllblöcke genäht haben. Das Top erhält dadurch einen wundervoll harmonischen Charakter. Ich habe das genäht:

Then Leo's top arrived here at my house. All the colors together weren't my cup of tea but I think, this is a very consistent and "fitting" quilt top. What I really love about it is, that everyone used the some blocks when spaces needed to be filled. It really doesn't look as if 12 women were working on this top! This was my part:

Heidi hat die Reihe dann ergänzt und Leo hat nun dieses Top erhalten:

Zuletzt habe ich an Heidi's Top gearbeitet. Ein Gartenquilt. Der hat manch einer Mitnäherin echtes Kopfzerbrechen bereitet, da das erste Zusammenfügen der Blöcke sich als nicht machbar erwiesen hat... Es musste getrennt und alles neu angeordnet werden, was dabei herauskam war ein sehr symmentrisches und auch harmonisches Top. Als ich es erhalten habe, hat auf der rechten Seite eine Reihe gefehlt, quasi als Gegenstück zu der linken Reihe, die Monika zuvor angenäht hatte. Und auch Bettinas Blöcke waren noch einzeln. Also habe ich diese zu einer Reihe ergänzt und den Part von Monika für die rechte Seite noch einmal nachgenäht. Es war allerdings fast unmöglich, meinen Teil zu fotografieren, weil ich diesen langen, schmalen Streifen auf der Seite gar nicht wirklich auf ein Foto bekommen hätte... Also zeige ich Euch mal ein paar Einzelfotos:

Last but not least I had to create something for Heidi. Her top was kind of a challenge for some participants. One of the ideas to arrange all the blocks was not feasible and the next one to receive it had to rip it all off and arrange it in a new way. The way the blocks were arranged then was very symmetric but nevertheless very pleasing. When I received it there was a column missing on the right side to keep this symmetric effect. So I decided to sew the same column that Monika created on the left side again and sew it on the right side of the top. Bettina's blocks were still orphan blocks and I added some more pieces to them so that I had a complete row which I sewed to the bottom of the top. It was impossible to take a picture of that long and narrow column that I sewed - that's why I am showing you some detail pictures now:

Bei flickr haben wir das ganze Jahr über ja immer nur Sneak Peeks zeigen dürfen, Heidi hat auf ihrem Blog so ein schönes Mosaik von ihren Sneak Peeks zusammengestellt - die Idee habe ich jetzt einfach mal geklaut... :-) Das waren also meine Ausschnitte, mit denen ich meine monatlichen Beiträge gezeigt habe:

In our flickr group we only showed sneak peek pictures throughout the year. Heidi created a lovely mosaic of her sneak peeks and I stole this idea from her :-) So this is a mosaic of my sneak peeks:

Ich hoffe, dass meine Mitnäherinnen mit meinen Blöcken zufrieden sind! Ich habe mir immer Mühe gegeben :-) Und jetzt mache ich mich mal daran, mein Top fertig zu stellen... :-)

I desperately hope, that my bee mates like what I made for them - I always tried to meet their taste and gave my best regarding accuracy and neatness :-) So, and now I'm going to finish my own top... :-)
